Follow the steps below for guidance on submitting your Common App Personal Essay (CAPE) for review through the Essay Portal. 📹 Watch the video below for a full walkthrough, and refer to the written steps for additional guidance.
Step 1 — Create Your Applying List
Before you can access your Common App essay prompt, you must have at least one Common App school on your Applying List.
Step 2 — Navigate to Your Essays
Once your Applying List is set up, go to the Essays tab and select Essays from the left-hand menu. At the top of the page under Multi-School Applications, you should see the Common App section.
Step 3 — Select Your Prompt
Choose the prompt you are writing to. If you are unsure which prompt to select, choose Prompt 7 until you have made a decision.
Step 4 — Open the Submission Area
To begin writing and submitting, click either Start Writing in Google Docs or View Essay History, then select Start Writing. This will open the tab where you will compose your essay.
Step 5 — Submit Your Essay
Once your essay is ready for review, click the link at the top of the page, leave a submission note with any context or concerns for your Essay Specialist, and hit Submit!
